*GREAT LIFTING AT WORLD MASTERS IN OSTRAVA

The organisers of the 2007 IPF World Masters Powerlifting Championships, held in Ostrava, Czechia from 2nd to 6th October, were delighted with the record number of 275 lifters from 25 countries, although there were 12 hours of competition on a couple of days during this week long event.

 

The Men’s Masters lifted in three age groups ( 40-49 ), ( 50-59 ), ( 60-69 ). In the Masters Four age group there were 10  lifters over 70 years of age and one 85 year old from Denmark.

 

The Women Master lifters were in two age groups ( 40-49 ) and ( 50 –59 ) and again age was no barrier to some lifters, the oldest a 70 year old  from Australia.

In the team event it was the USA who swept the board taking first place in all groups.

 

Importantly, there were no easy titles as the standard of lifting was higher than last year.

12 new World records were made during the week.

 

Some Master lifters will be in Soelden in the Tyrol, Austria next week  for the major event of the IPF year, the Women’s/Men’s Open World Championships  - no age limitations here.

 

The venue for this prestigious event in the popular ski resort of Soeldon, 100kms from Innsbruck , will be the Frezeitarena Sports Centre.

 

The organisers have reported a large entry of over 400 men and women from almost 50 countries for the Championships to be held from 15th to 19th October.

 

This is good news for the sport of Powerlifting as big lifting classes tend to increase the standard of lifting. World records are expected  to be broken by lifters in order to win the coveted title of World Champion.

At the IPF Congress, held before the Championships, the officials of the IPF will be elected by the member nations to serve for the next four years.
